Collage of four young people outdoors: a young man crouching on a sandy trail, a young woman sitting among wildflowers, tall grass in the background; a young woman standing on a dirt path with her hands in her hair, smiling; a young man leaning on a wooden fence, looking at the camera.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning your senior portraits should be fun and stress-free. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about senior photo sessions with Wild Ivy Studio.

  • Most seniors schedule their photos the summer before or early in their senior year. July through October are the most popular months because of the beautiful natural light and fall colors.

I recommend booking at least 1–2 months in advance to secure your preferred date.

In Michigan, the most popular months for family sessions are May through October, especially during fall color season.

  • Senior sessions can take place at beautiful outdoor locations around Michigan, including parks, fields, downtown areas, lakeshore spots, or wooded trails.

If you have a specific place in mind that is meaningful to you, we can absolutely incorporate that into your session.

  • This depends on the session you choose, but most seniors bring 2–4 outfits. A mix of casual and dressy looks photographs really well and gives you more variety in your final gallery.

Layers like jackets, hats, or flannels are also great for creating different looks.

  • The most important thing is choosing outfits that feel like you. Solid colors, soft textures, and well-fitting clothing tend to photograph best.

    A few tips:

    • Avoid large logos or busy patterns

    • Choose outfits you feel confident in

    • Bring accessories like hats, jewelry, or jackets to switch up your look

After booking, you'll receive a styling guide to help you plan your outfits.

  • Yes! Props are a great way to personalize your session. Some ideas include:

    • Sports equipment

    • Musical instruments

    • Letterman jackets

    • Books or hobbies

    • Your car or truck

Anything that represents your personality or interests is welcome.

  • Almost everyone says this before their session. I’ll guide you through natural posing and movement so nothing feels stiff or uncomfortable.

My goal is to make the session relaxed and fun, so we capture genuine expressions and personality.

  • Of course! Parents are always welcome to attend. Many families enjoy being part of the experience and helping with outfits or cheering their senior on.

  • Your edited gallery will be delivered within 6 weeks after your session. You will likely receive your gallery before the 6 week mark. You'll receive a private online gallery where you can download images, share them with family, and order prints.

  • If rain or severe weather is expected, we’ll simply reschedule your session to the next available date with better conditions.

  • Absolutely. You don’t need any modeling experience. I’ll guide you through posing, movement, and natural expressions so your photos look relaxed and confident.

  • Most outdoor senior sessions take place during golden hour, which is the hour before sunset. The light is soft, warm, and flattering, creating that beautiful glow you see in many professional portraits.

Morning sessions can also be scheduled if evening light doesn’t work with your schedule.

  • Professional hair and makeup is completely optional, but many seniors choose to have it done for their session. It can help you feel confident and camera-ready.

If you do your own makeup, I recommend applying it slightly more defined than everyday makeup so it photographs well. The goal is still to look like yourself, just a little polished for the camera.

  • A little preparation goes a long way in helping your session run smoothly.

    Here are a few tips:

    • Try on all outfits ahead of time to make sure everything fits comfortably

    • Iron or steam clothing if needed

    • Bring comfortable shoes if we’ll be walking between locations

    • Get plenty of rest the night before your session

Most importantly, come ready to have fun. The best photos happen when you feel relaxed and confident.

  • Michigan offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, but the most popular time for senior sessions is late summer through fall. August and September provide warm golden light and lush greenery, while October is perfect for vibrant fall color portraits.

If you love the look of fall leaves, I recommend booking early since those dates fill quickly.

  • Yes. Fall is one of the most requested times for senior portraits because Michigan’s colors are absolutely stunning. Sessions during September and October often feature golden fields, colorful trees, and warm sunset light.

Because fall sessions are limited and very popular, I recommend booking several weeks in advance.

  • Absolutely. Michigan has so many beautiful locations for senior portraits, including lakeshores, parks, wooded trails, and charming downtown areas. If you love the look of beach sunsets, dunes, or waterfront views, we can plan a location that highlights the natural beauty of Michigan.

I also have a list of favorite locations that photograph beautifully in every season.

  • Yes. Many seniors like to include a few cap and gown photos either during their senior session or during a short session in the spring closer to graduation.

It’s a great way to celebrate this milestone and create photos that are perfect for announcements and graduation celebrations.
